Move your number from Google Voice to Tonet
Unlock your Google Voice number, or get a Google Workspace port-out PIN, then move the number to Tonet. What you need, fees and common rejections.
To port a personal Google Voice number out to Tonet, first unlock it in Google Voice. Then fill in Manage › Phones › Port a Number in Tonet: your Google Voice number is the account number, and your voicemail PIN is the PIN. Keep the number in Google Voice until it has moved.
Google Voice through work, with Google Workspace? Your administrator gets a port-out PIN instead. See Google Workspace accounts.
What you need from Google Voice
| You need | Personal account | Google Workspace account |
|---|---|---|
| Account number | Your 10-digit Google Voice number | Google lists only a PIN and ZIP code for US ports. See the form. |
| PIN | The PIN you use for Google Voice voicemail | The port-out code from the Admin console |
| Address | Google's page doesn't ask for one | The primary location set for Voice in the Admin console |
| Before you start | Unlock the number | Your administrator gets the port-out code |
| Cost | $3 to unlock. Free if you ported the number into Google Voice. | Google's port-out page doesn't list a fee. |
Unlock your Google Voice number
- On a computer, open Google Voice.
- At the top right, click Settings.
- Go to the Account section.
- Under the number you're moving, click Unlock.
- Pay with your Google Account.
When it works, Google Voice shows Number unlocked at the bottom left.
Unlocking costs $3. It's free if the number came into Google Voice from another carrier.
If Google Voice asks you to verify your identity, finish that first. Google requires it before some numbers can be ported out.
Google Workspace accounts
If Google Voice comes with your work or school account, your administrator handles the port. Google says to contact them.
Your administrator needs the Google Voice Admin role. In the Google Admin console:
- Go to Menu › Apps › Google Workspace › Google Voice.
- Click Number porting, then Port-out info.
- Copy the code shown. That's the PIN for the port.
- Click Close.
- On the same Google Voice page, click Locations and note the primary address.
Use that primary address in Tonet, even if your invoice shows a different billing address. For US numbers, Google says the new provider needs the PIN and the ZIP code of that address.
Don't change the port-out code while a port is running. Google says changing it can get the port rejected.
Keep the number in Google Voice until the port finishes
- Personal account: don't delete the Google Voice number once the port has started.
- Google Workspace: don't cancel Voice until the port is complete. Google says the port can be rejected if you do.
Your number keeps working in Google Voice until the switch.
Move the number to Tonet
Owners, managers and administrators can start a port.
- Unlock the number, or get the port-out code from your administrator.
- In Tonet, go to Manage › Phones and open the Port a Number tab.
- Fill in the form as shown below. Tonet fills in some fields from your Tonet account, so check each one.
- Under Proof the numbers are yours, click Attach a file and add a screenshot of your Google Voice account (or, for Workspace, the Admin console) showing the number.
- Read the Authorization text. Sign in the box, then type your name in Print your full name.
- Click Submit porting request.
| Field in Tonet | What to enter |
|---|---|
| First name, Last name | The account holder's name |
| Organization | Your business name. Tonet fills in your Tonet business name. |
| Street address, City, State, Zip code | Personal: your address. Workspace: the Voice primary location. |
| E-mail address | Where Tonet sends updates about this port |
| Residential or business | Residential for a personal account, Business for Google Workspace |
| Current service provider | Google Voice |
| Account number | Personal: your 10-digit Google Voice number |
| Account PIN / passcode | Personal: your Google Voice voicemail PIN. Workspace: the port-out code. |
| Telephone number and Type | Each number you're moving, with Wireless or VoIP |
The form needs an account number for Wireless or VoIP numbers. On Google Workspace, if you don't know what to enter, email support@tonet.ai before you submit.
Put every Google Voice number you're moving in one request. Tonet handles one port request at a time. Once it's approved, click Port another number to start the next.
Not ready? Click Save draft and come back later.
After you submit
The Port a Number tab shows where your request is:
Ringing on Tonet. Calls to your number ring in Tonet: browser, apps and desk phones.
You: Call your number to check it rings in Tonet. Only then close anything left with your old carrier.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Submitted | Tonet has your request and checks it before filing it with the carrier. |
| In progress | Your request is being processed. Most ports complete in 7 to 10 business days. |
| More information needed | Read the message under Messages, type your answer in Your reply, attach a file if asked, and click Send reply. The request goes back to In progress. |
| Approved | The numbers appear under My Phone Numbers once the transfer completes. |
| Not approved | Read the Reason for rejection, fix it, and click Edit and resubmit. |
Tonet emails the address in E-mail address when it receives your request (with a copy of the letter you signed), when it needs something from you, and when the request is approved or not approved.
The date can't be guaranteed: Google decides when the port completes.
When the number appears under My Phone Numbers, choose where its calls go and who can use it. To text from it, register it for texting.
Why Google Voice ports get rejected
| Reason | How to fix it |
|---|---|
| The number is still locked | Unlock it in Google Voice, then resubmit. |
| Wrong PIN | Personal: use your voicemail PIN. Workspace: copy the code from Port-out info again. |
| The Workspace port-out code was changed during the port | Send Tonet the current code. Don't change it again until the port is done. |
| The address doesn't match (Workspace) | Use the primary location from Locations in the Admin console. |
| Voice was cancelled, or the number deleted, before the port finished | Keep Voice and the number until the port completes. If either is already gone, email support@tonet.ai. |
| Google needs to verify your identity | Finish identity verification in Google Voice, then resubmit. |
To send a new PIN or code: if the request shows More information needed, send it under Messages. If it shows Not approved, click Edit and resubmit. Otherwise, email support@tonet.ai.
